PTFE Tubing


Description

PTFE (polytetraflouroethylene) was discovered by DuPont in 1938 and was later commercialized by DuPont under the registered trademark Teflon®. PTFE extruded tubing is typically supplied in coils or rolls and is available in a variety of gauge sizes and wall thicknesses. It is an ideal material in a variety of industries and applications because it is a fluoropolymer component that is strong, translucent, lightweight, lubricious and flexible. It maintains a high dielectric strength over a wide range of frequencies, is chemically inert, has low extractables and is chemically resistant to acids, bases and all common solvents. PTFE is biocompatible, holds tight tolerances and is resistant in a wide range of temperatures. It can be EtO and autoclave sterilized.


Application Examples

Relevant applications for Zeus PTFE tubing occur in the following industries: aerospace, analytical sciences, automotive, chemical, electrical, fiber optics, liquid handling, pharmaceutical and medical. Specific examples are described below.
  • AEROSPACE: Fluoropolymers are increasingly the preferred choice in global aerospace applications because they preserve their excellent properties even when exposed to elevated temperatures and aggressive fuels. PTFE provides specific aerospace, defense and space solutions in the areas of wire harness, composite forming, fluid management and more.
  • CHEMICAL: This tubing withstands corrosive fluids, such as sulfuric acid, hydrocarbon fuels and strong mineral acids.
  • ELECTRICAL: PTFE tubing's light weight, high dielectric and tensile strengths, lubricity and resistance to extreme temperatures, make it a preferred material in electrical applications where other plastics are less effective. The qualities of PTFE enhance performance in applications such as microwave cable insulation, connector and terminal sleeves and battery pack and capacitor encapsulation.
  • FIBER OPTICS: PTFE also provides solutions in the field of fiber optics, where performance is enhanced when optical fibers are coated with PTFE. The lubricity of PTFE provides a perfect material for easily sliding over delicate fibers without causing damage. The material is UV resistant and can operate in a variety of extremes from cryogenic low temperatures to up to 500°F (260°C) without significant linear expansion.
  • MEDICAL: PTFE is a preferred material particularly for medical applications because of its lubricity. Its ability to minimize friction is key in medical markets for both vascular applications, such as structural heart repair, cardiac rhythm management, and renal denervation, as well as non-vascular applications such as endoscopy, oncology, urology and cosmetic surgery. PTFE can be inserted into the body without concern for abrasion, and because it is chemically inert, the possibility of a reaction is limited. Therefore, it is a preferred choice for specific applications such as lining catheter IDs, guide wires, introducers and guiding catheters.
  • PHARMACEUTICAL: PTFE's inherently pure nature (fluorine and carbon), makes it an excellent material selection for pharmaceutical applications requiring a high degree of purity.

Stock and Customization

Component Supply offers PTFE extruded tubing in both AWG and fractional sizes with several wall thickness options. Bulk quantities in 8 gauge or smaller are supplied in 500-foot or 1000-foot spools depending gauge size. Bulk quantities in 7 gauge or larger are supplied in 100-foot coils. With researchers and product designers in mind, Component Supply also supplies PTFE tubing in 100-foot or 50-foot lengths and ships them as spools or coils depending on the diameter and the wall thickness. Our proprietary processes and equipment enable the custom cutting of this material to customers' specifications while maintaining the integrity of the tubing dimensions, holding tight tolerances and keeping the cuts straight. We also have the capability to redraw this tubing to custom inside and outside diameters in small quantities.
