Fluoropolymers are a go-to material in medical device development due to their biocompatibility, chemical inertness, low coefficient of friction, temperature resistance, and electrical insulation. FEP is resistant to most chemicals except molten alkali metals, fluorine (gas) and some other halogen complexes. It also has excellent dielectric strength. FEP heat shrink is often a preferred choice over PTFE, when a lower shrink temperature (400 degrees) is an asset. FEP can be autoclaved and gamma sterilized.
