Polyester vs Nylon

Polyester or Nylon: does it really make a difference? If your application requires mesh, then the answer is a definite yes. While both materials might look the same at first glance and are synthetic polymers, polyester and nylon have some key differences that can affect the outcome.

Let’s break it down so you can pick the best fit!

Polyester Mesh is made from polyethylene terephthalate, often abbreviated as PET. Some of the main characteristics this mesh offers are rigidity, a higher chemical resistance, and is generally considered suitable for applications where the mesh comes in contact with (salt) water, or sterilization such as autoclave is needed.

Nylon Mesh is made from polyamide 6/6, often abbreviated as PA66. It is considered softer and more flexible than polyester. It is also abrasion and alkali resistant, and is great for temporary or external applications. This mesh can be EtO (Ethylene Oxide) sterilized or supplied in medical grade.

So, what’s the takeaway? It does not just come down to material preference but heavily depends on the environment. If exposure to water is a factor, polyester is the better choice. But in humid and dry conditions, nylon is the better choice. Both materials can be sterilized but not with the same methods, so careful consideration is needed.

We stock both polymers on our website for testing and/or review purposes in three sheet sizes: 1/4, 1/2, and full yards, for industries such as mining, agriculture, aquaculture, medical, and laboratory.
