REAP: September Awareness – Childhood Cancer

September: Childhood Cancer Awareness
September is recognized around the world as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This is a time to raise awareness, support families, and shine a light on current research. Although childhood cancers are rare compared to adult cancers, they remain the leading cause of disease-related death among children in the United States. Thanks to continuous research, donations, clinical trials, and improved technologies, survival rates have improved in recent decades. But, there is still much work to be done.

Statistics of Pediatric Cancers
It’s estimated that 400,000 children between the ages of 0-19 are diagnosed worldwide. In the United States, those statistics for 2025 are 9,550 children under the age of 15.

What are the types of Childhood Cancers?
The most common types of pediatric cancers are:

  • Leukemia
  • Brain
  • Central Nervous System
  • Lymphoma
  • Neuroblastoma
  • Wilms Tumor

It’s estimated that leukemia alone accounts for roughly 28% of cases in children, and brain and central nervous system make up about 26%.

Survival and Long-Term Outlook
Thanks to continuous research, the five-year survival rate for childhood cancer is now 85% or higher in the United States and exceeds 80% in many high-income countries worldwide. As of 2020, there were nearly 496,000 pediatric cancer survivors in the U.S. alone. These numbers highlight remarkable progress, but they also indicate the ongoing need for research to improve treatments, reduce side effects, and support long-term quality of life.

Our Part in September
At Component Supply, we’re not the ones curing cancer, but our goal is to put quality medical device components in the hands of people who are. That’s why we launched CS REAP – Component Supply’s Research Engagement and Awareness Program. We want to see patients nationwide REAP the benefits of advancement in medical device research and development for the diseases affecting them. So, every month we are offering discounted pricing and spotlights on our blogs and social media to researchers and product designers who fill out a brief survey.

How Do I Get Involved With CS REAP?

If you are currently researching Childhood Cancer, all you have to do is:

  • Share a link to your research website, or a 3-5 sentence summary of the work you are doing in the field.
  • Let us know which of our medical device components you’re interested in purchasing to support your research.
  • Complete a short, 6-question survey so we can learn more about you and your work.

And that’s it! Upon returning the survey, you will receive a discount code to use in our online store. The survey will be highlighted on our blog, and the blog post will be promoted through our social media channels, LinkedIn and Facebook.
