Nitinol is a nickel-titanium paramagnetic alloy named for its composition and discovery at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Superelastic Nitinol exhibits exceptional elasticity at room and body temperature, allowing it to be strained up to eight times more than ordinary spring steel without permanent deformation. This makes it ideal for shape-setting, intricate bends, and precision forming in medical devices.
Superelastic grades have transformation temperatures between 10°C and 18°C (50°F–64.4°F).
